You’ll be staying on the stunning beach in Kokkini Hani, the fishing village turned holiday resort in northern Crete. For first-timers and returning visitors, must-dos include lazing on the sand, watching the windsurfers in action and visiting Crete’s historic capital, Heraklion: located a 20-minute drive away, it's worth a visit for its fascinating Venetian fortress, Archaeological Museum, Palace of Knossos, and Saint Minas Cathedral. Elsewhere on the island, highlights include hiking the Samaria Gorge, venturing to the slopes of Mount Ida to see the Ideon Cave where Zeus was supposedly born and raised, and taking a boat trip to Spinalonga - the haunting island that was used as a leper colony between 1913 and 1957.
