Cruise along California’s stunning coastline on a scenic self-driving tour from San Francisco to Santa Monica, with flights, rental car and more
Days 1-3: San Francisco
Your California coastal tour begins in San Francisco, as you touch down at the airport and hop into your rental car ready to hit the streets. After settling into your stylish pad in Union Square, start by ticking off iconic vistas like the Coit Tower, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge with a leisurely walk northwards, or simply hop on the city’s beloved cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, where souvenir shops, sea lions and seafood can be enjoyed right on the waterfront.
For a spot of tranquillity at the heart of the city, wander into Golden Gate Park, the Japanese Tea Gardens or the Presidio, home to the imposing Greco-Roman Palace of Fine Arts. Quirky must-sees like the Painted Ladies and Lombard Street are a short drive or cable-car ride away, and if the latter leaves you wanting more, be sure to check out the San Francisco Cable Car Museum. Whatever you choose, be sure to dip your toes in the city’s legendary foodie scene, whether that’s a fine-dining institution in Jackson Square, far-flung flavours in Chinatown and Japantown, or a hip Hayes Valley eatery.
Days 4-5: Monterey
After a whirlwind stay in San Francisco, trade cosmopolitan amusements for stunning natural landscapes as you drive to Monterey, winding through scenic coastal roads with rugged cliffs to one side and the deep blue Pacific Ocean to the other.
Hunker down in your cosy coastal hideaway, or get exploring to see this idyllic seaside town’s best-loved spots. Nearby highlights include the pastel-hued cottages and quaint Victorian buildings of the State Historic Park, while at Old Fisherman’s Wharf you can get your fill of Monterey’s famed seafood offerings, from the signature clam chowder to fresh crab, shrimp, oysters and more. Elsewhere, John Steinbeck fans shouldn’t miss the author’s memorial on Cannery Row, the former sardine factory featured in the eponymous novel. And for all-things marine life, wander through the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or get up close and personal with ocean giants on an optional half-day whale watching tour.
Day 6: Santa Barbara
Say goodbye to Monterey as you embark on a magical four-hour drive to Santa Barbara. Take in awe-inspiring views as you cross the breathtaking Bixby Bridge, and perhaps stop by coastal highlights like Limekiln State Park, Hearst Castle and Pismo Beach.
Make the most of your intimate beachfront digs to rest up after your journey, and enjoy a long sunset stroll on the silky-soft sands at your doorstep. If time permits, soak up the city’s culture and history with a visit to the grand Santa Barbara County Courthouse, or head to the Old Mission Santa Barbara to step back in time to the city’s 18th-century roots. Elsewhere, nature lovers can choose between the tranquil Botanic Garden or an enchanting hike to Inspiration Point, while oenology enthusiasts can follow the Urban Wine Trail to tick off some of the city’s best wineries.
Days 7-8: Santa Monica
Take the wheel ready for the last leg of your panoramic road-trip, as you head from your peaceful beachfront abode to Santa Monica, a beloved coastal area just west of central Los Angeles. With the journey lasting around two hours, you’ll have plenty of time to soak up the scenery on the Pacific Coast Highway, or perhaps take a detour inland to artsy Ojai before cruising through star-studded Malibu and stopping at the spectacular Getty Villa museum.
Having reached your final destination, you’ll find Santa Monica’s beloved beach at your doorstep, as well as the option to take to the waves with a fun surfing lesson. When you aren’t making a splash or sipping sundowners, wander through the iconic Santa Monica Pier for carnival thrills and a ride on the ferris wheel, refuel al fresco on Ocean Avenue, or enjoy a chill-out session under the palm trees at Palisades Park. And if you’ve been hankering for city-slicking pursuits, start with a shopping spree on 3rd Street Promenade, before heading to downtown LA for endless foodie, culture and cosmopolitan hotspots.
