Days 1-2: Barcelona

Your city-slicking escape begins in Barcelona, the vibrant Catalonian capital synonymous with avant-garde style and all things Gaudí. Trace the footsteps of the legendary architect with a visit to Casa Vicens Gaudí, his first major project, before ticking off world-famous landmarks like Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell and the breathtaking Sagrada Familia Basilica. Elsewhere, get up close to the work of another Spanish icon at the Picasso Museum, or wander through thousands of years of art at the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

When you aren’t soaking up the city’s endless artistic hotspots, saunter down La Rambla to the heart of the Gothic Quarter, whose narrow medieval streets are lined with enchanting period architecture, landmark churches and museums, and plenty of buzzing shops and eateries. While you’re here, perhaps top up a peek inside the spectacular cathedral with a visit to the city’s impressive aquarium, before enjoying a scenic stroll or sunbathing session on one of the beautiful beaches just beyond.

Days 3-4: Madrid

After a fabulous few days in Barcelona, you'll board one of Europe's finest high-speed trains ready to soar through some of Spain's most scenic routes. As Barcelona's Modernist landmarks give way to Madrid's old-world elegance, be sure to admire the rolling hills, sprawling countryside and charming villages in between.

Once here, you’ll be staying within easy reach of Madrid's cultural highlights, from the San Fernando Fine Art Royal Academy just down the street, to the internationally-renowned collections of the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums within 15 minutes’ walk away. In the opposite direction, follow the sprawling boulevard at your doorstep to Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s most iconic squares where must-dos include sampling pastries at the historic La Mallorquina bakery and marvelling at traditional hand fans at Casa de Diego. Continue onwards to see the glittering Plaza Mayor and imposing Royal Palace, and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the gardens of Campo del Moro. Elsewhere, indulge in high-end retail therapy at El Corte Inglés and in the swanky Salamanca district, sample mouthwatering local specialties like tortilla, Iberian ham croquettes and garlic shrimp, and kick back in the vast El Retiro park just a short walk from your hotel.
