Bowness-on-Windermere
Within the heart of the Lake District National Park (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), this Tripadvisor Travellers' 2021 Choice-awardee is in Bowness, on the eastern shore of Windermere – the park's largest lake. It overlooks the aptly named 'Belle Isle', with Langdale Pike (often snow-capped in winter) and the Fairfield Horseshoe in the distance.
Historic sites of interest include the Neolithic Stone Circle at Castlerigg, the Bronze Age settlement at Threlkeld and the Roman fort at Hardknott Pass which makes for one of England's most spectacular drives. Know that you are following in the footsteps of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, who both spent time in the area.
