Augsburg
The Altstadt (old town) of Augsburg is a time-capsule for the city’s centuries-long history, where you can wander between medieval guildhouses and Renaissance palaces. Definitely worth a visit are the 17th-century city hall, with its magnificent Golden Hall, and the Schaezlerpalais, a baroque palace with breathtaking interiors. You won’t be disappointed on the museum front, either; the Maximilian Museum houses a unique collection of objects from the city’s history inside a 16th-century palatial building with beautifully-frescoed ceilings, and the LETTL Museum is a gallery displaying the enigmatic paintings of Augsburg surrealist, Wolfgang Lettl. You may also wish to learn more about the canals and water towers that make up the water system of Augsburg, and which collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site; even if you don’t go seeking them out, you’re sure to come across the medieval waterways that flow alongside the streets or the monumental fountains that dominate the public squares. Other must-dos include catching a show at the famous marionette theatre, the Augsburger Puppenkiste, and sipping a coffee in Rathausplatz (the town hall square) as you marvel at the surrounding architecture.
