Sligo
Whether you’re here to unwind with a backdrop or embark on outdoor adventures, the enchanting countryside of County Sligo has plenty to offer. Your hotel makes an ideal launchpad for exploring the wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500-kilometre coastal trail that dazzles with its crashing waves, rugged cliffs and charming cottages. Its epic landscapes have inspired many a brooding artist, not least W.B. Yeats, after whom Sligo is often referred to as ‘Yeats Country.’ Trace the legendary poet’s footsteps with a visit to the imposing Benbulbin rock formation, and perhaps enjoy a scenic stroll on the surrounding Forest Walk.
Culture vultures and history buffs shouldn’t miss seeing Yeats’ grave at Drumcliffe Church, also the site of a former 11th-century monastery, as well as the prehistoric tombs at Carrowmore - the largest of their kind in Europe that date back around 6,000 years. Elsewhere, visit the historic Lissadell estate, home to the first female minister in a modern European democracy, or go for a spot of surfing at the renowned Strandhill Beach.
